Working: Each day is casual to some U.S. Postal Service folks

'There's no mail today because it's a federal holiday. But Ricky Hurt will be working. He's a 'casual' or temporary U.S. Postal Service worker and he doesn't get holidays off... Even though he's a so-called 'casual' worker, Hurt has been working for the Postal Service since July 2002 handling and sorting mail.'

Hey Ricky, wake up. The Postal Service is forcing their career employees out to the street. Lost 70,000 workers in the past few years, 21,000 last year and management is grinding the axe for 2005. Suggest you go to college, get an education and apply for a real job.Forget the Postal Service. The Postal Service is corrupt with poor management. It is the management destroying the Postal Service. There will be no Postal Service unless these managers are fired.

They know they are temp when they take the job. No reason to wine. Go find another job if you don't like the requirements.

I AM A LOCAL UNION PRESIDENT WHO WOULD MOST GRACIOUSLY REPRESENT CASUALS IF THEY WERE ALLOWED TO JOIN THE UNION. AND I HAVE, ON OCCASSION, IF IT DID NOT HARM MY MEMBERSHIP, STOOD UP FOR A CASUAL THAT REALLY NEEDED HELP. THE POSTAL SERVICE WANTS THESE CASUALS AS A SECONDARY WORKFORCE, TO BE PAID LESS FOR THE SAME WORK AND MANY OTHERS COMPANIES DO THE SAME. IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE UNIONS, WE WOULD ALL BE MAKING THAT WAGE WITH NO BENIFITS. CASUALS WERE ORIGINALLY TO BE USED AS CHISTMAS HELP, BUT VARIOUS ARBITRATORS, MANY OF THEM LAWYERS, ALLOWED THE POSTAL SERVICE TO HIRE THEM AS A SECONDARY WORK FORCE WITH NO BENIFITS, ETC. THESE CASUALS, LIKE THE ONE IN THE ARTICLE, NEED TO STEP FORWARD AND TELL ABOUT HOW MANY TIMES THEY'VE BEEN HIRED, TO CIRCUMVENT THE CONTRACT FROM HIRING REGULAR EMPLOYEES, AND THEY NEED TO TELL IT TO AN ARBITRATOR. DON'T BLAME THE UNION FOR THE MISGIVIVINGS OF THE POSTAL SERVICE, THEY WANT TO HIRE CASUALS TO GET MORE "BANG FOR THE BUCK".

Only the poor casuals had to work the holiday? Look again and see how many career empoyees (ptf AND ftr) are mandatoried in to work thanksgiving. Mail doesn't move if the clerks don't process it.

I'll tell you one thing and it's the truth. I would not work as a mailhandler and do the job I currently do now for what they are paying the casuals these days. I hate my job, but I stay there for the money and the benefits, as I'm sure 80% of the career does. If the USPS turns into a low wage, no benefit type of job I'm gone. The casuals at my P&DC are mostly people of color (immigrants) who can barely speak English, let alone understand it enough to carry on a conversation. These people are at the bottom in a dead end job, if they want to better themselves they need to get some training. The USPS is a dead end job for everyone essentially because it will not give you any employable skills desired by the private sector.

When I first started in the POD, we were called CAREER SUBSTITUTES. After the 1970 strike & the contract, that was accepted by the national leadership, th name changed to PART TIME FLEXIBLES. I have worked many holidays, especially when I moved to my present location, so my kids would get a decent education. I also worked for a few years on the holidays when the 1990-1994 contract allowed this to happen. Working a holiday is a good time to relax & take it easy while delivering the Express & Priority mail. I enjoyed working these days as I also relaxed when going to different places that the P&DC covered. It was fun.
Eddie, you are correct & I support the statement that you mentioned. All I will say to any carrier who works on a holiday is to enjoy & relax while delivering the mail that you arte given. It can be an easy day.

ALWAYS ENJOYED WORKING THE HOLIDAYS

I know casuals who are so poor that they do extra work such as stuffing envelopes for companies at home. Some are even blood donors to make an extra buck. And I have even heard of some young casual guys who are sperm bank donors. They are that damn desperate for extra money. USPS is a dead end employer for casuals. I personally think fast food businesses is better work than postal casual work.

It ain't right that casual scabs can come and do work for 6 months a year as a carrier and then do 6 months a year as a clerk. This is just about scabs taking work away from part time and full time flexibles. Casuals cause full time flexibles to not get to become regular full time career employees. And alot of the casuals can't speak much English. The rest are white trash. We get alot of young punk gay white guys with multiple tatoos and earrings. Really flaming types with their headphones and nasty attitudes.

I don't feel sorry for any freakin casuals. They know it a damn temp job when they sign up. So stop their bitchin.

DON'T CALL THEM CASUALS CALL THEM TEMPS.

well eddie you may be right maybe every other big company is cutting back on jobs . but did you happen to take a look at what jobs their cutting . all of the other big companies started with middle management....you know the less productive employees. the one s who stand around trying to figure out what they can do next to screw up the way we do our jobs. we have supervisors in post office s that dont need them standing around trying to find something wrong .... so they can discuss it with you oh and then remember you have to be done by a certain time not to get overtime. if they took they supervisors pay and benefits and added them together we would all have to work and extra 10 hrs a week to make up for his income for the year. almost comical that the biggest waste of money is standing on the floor every day watching us work so keep costs down.....

As a 22 year employee, I know like the rest of career ones that we had to take the test and wait for a letter. It is still the same process and if a casual makes it in over them just consider they had practice before the probabtion period. Cases have been won against the abuse of the casual usage but it goes nowhere. Only the lawyers get rich. I switched to clerk after 18 years of carrying and still remain ptf after 5 years thanks to casuals.

I don't know.......... I don't think a person says " well, I think I'll get a job as a casual in the Post Office to keep Joe Schmo from making full time". I would, however, think that the Post Office would hire casuals to keep Joe Schmo from MAKING regular. Then, they can keep you on any list they want to, hence removing them from the responsibility of thinking.

Methinks priorities and "thanks" should be put in their proper prospective, directed towards management, and not fighting/bickering amongst the ranks.

5 supervisors in one room to watch 30 workers who happen to all be in that said same room? Unbelievable!..if only we could afford to give this kind of attention to our Public school students.

Toejammer 1, why do you find it necessary to call me an idiot because I took on the whole casuals system? Of course it is the freakin supervisers fault but the casuals are still scabs. Alot of them know it and act arrogant about it. Some come and go but some of these suckers stay for years. 6 months deliver 6 months sort. That is not right and should end. In England one post office had so many casuals that the regulars all went on strike. The usps is alot superior to any other country but we just complacently let this casual stuff hurt our careers. I know many ptf employees who can't get promoted because of the garbage of casuals. So keep your name calling to yourself. I never called you any names.

Complaining about being called names? Gimme a break. Check your original post with the gay-bashing and thinly-veiled racism. Don't like hateful posts directed at you? Than show an ounce of class when you post, and wipe that drool off your shirt.

THE SOUTHEAST STAION POST OFFICE IN OKLAHOMA CITY,OK TREATS THEIR TEMPS LIKE GARBAGE. THE SUPERVISERS TREAT ALL THE TEMPS AS SLAVES.

to the guy or gal named toejam 1, Homophobia is really bad. Thanks for responding to that. There is alot of homophobic sentiment with alot of postal employees sadly. But you yourself called casuals stupid. That is wrong too. Thanks for listening, Michael-out and proud at USPS

At my post office most casuals are foreign. We have some native born whites. Also foreign white casuals from Russia, Ukraine and Hungary. Foreign casuals from Mexico, Cuba and Guatemala. Foreign casuals from Haiti and Dominican Republic. The white foreign casuals speak and understand English fairly well. The people of color foreign casuals speak hardly a word. Why were they hired anyway?

That toejammer idiot will never be a manager. Never do anything worthwhile at USPS. I bet he's a temp himself.

Hey assjammer, er I mean toejammer. Stop your whiny fag friendly posting you undercover management ass toy. You gay casuals are ruining the postal service.

Some casuals are so stupid that they really believe if they have sex with supervisers they will be hired permentally. I have caught supervisers and young female casuals right when they were having sex. One black casual girl about 22 was really going down on the white superviser. His body fluids were all over her face. It was disgusting let me tell you. And was she made permenent? Hell no of course not.

Toejammer, really guy, ease up. Don't be so defensive if you ain't polishin management knob son. Really!!

I worked as a postal worker for a number of years but got a college degree and became a psychologist. The casuals at the post office where I worked were totally inadequate for the job. And yes there was lots of sex both heterosexual and homosexual going on in the post office often involving casuals.

Casuals are selling their blood to blood banks and sperm to sperm banks? God damn that is something. I would sure hate to have an operation and get some of those f--- up druggies as my blood donor. God damn. And won't they be 'fathering' some geniuses'? I never heard of that. I did know that most are on welfare and food stamp coupon things.

Toejammer, have some fun with the posts of bs99.You seem rather articulate & would be a great thorn in his side.

Ricky Hurt will be asking for trouble giving an interview. The managers will fire his stupid ass in a new york minute.

I am a FTR mail processing clerk. Casual KNOW they are only part time when they get hired in. Thus the term- casual. Sure I sometimes feel bad but they knew what they were getting into when they started. I know they have families and are just trying to make it. There are PTF's at my office that have been there for almost 8 years. They just broke the hiring freeze and 60 new people will be hired. 6 TE's will be converted out of the group. Postal Management treats everyone bad. This last group of casuals were pretty useless. You get what you pay for. Sure some work harder than the regulars but that is rare. Those are the ones I feel bad for.
