MARGATE - A postal mailbox at the corner of Rumson and Atlantic avenues was unbolted and stolen from its location sometime between 1 p.m. Tuesday and noon Wednesday, officials said.

Margate police and the Atlantic County Terrorism Task Force ask for the public's help to find the mailbox and the culprit or culprits responsible for its theft, officials said.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area of the stolen mailbox during the time involved - or who sees a suspicious mailbox in their area - is asked to contact Margate police at (609) 822-1151 or the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office at (609) 909-7800.

In another development, several mail pouches were stolen at about 6:50 p.m. Tuesday from a postal truck parked at the rear platform of the Glendora Post Office in Gloucester Township, Camden County, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service said.

Earlier this month, at about 6:10 p.m. Nov. 4, mail pouches were taken from a truck parked at the rear dock of the Blackwood Post Office at 200 Davistown Road in the same township, postal authorities said. Stolen in that heist were 23 Civil War, Grand Army of the Republic badges.

It is not known if the Margate and Camden County incidents are considered related.

Postal inspectors offer a reward of as much as $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the Glendora and/or Blackwood mail-pouch thefts, authorities said.

A joint investigation by the Postal Inspection Service, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, the Camden County Sheriff's Office, New Jersey State Police and the Gloucester Township Police Department has developed two suspects in connection with the Glendora theft, authorities said.

The first suspect is described as a black male, about 17 to 20 years old and about 5 feet, 4 inches tall, with a thin build, dark eyes and a dark complexion. He was wearing dark clothing at the time of the incident.

The second suspect, also a black male, is described as about 25 years old and about 5 feet, 9 inches tall, with a thin build, dark eyes, a light complexion and a scruffy beard and mustache. He was wearing a red wool hat or cap.

Authorities ask anyone with information about either Camden County mail theft to contact postal police at (201) 714-6300, postal inspectors at (856) 933-4176 or their local police department.

Theft of mail is punishable by as long as five years in prison and $250,000 in fines for each article of mail stolen.
