SEATTLE - Dana Knickerbocker was working a landscaping job in a Seattle neighborhood when he found bundle upon bundle of undelivered mail dumped in the bushes.
"Checks, blank checks, magazines, all kinds of mail," he said.
About 400 pieces of mail dating back to June were simply thrown away by a letter carrier around Seattle's Columbia city neighborhood.
It's an outrage to those who depend on the postal service.
"It just seems incredible that someone would do that, to me. A lot of these are seniors in this area who are depending on their checks, you know," said
Postal inspectors say their suspect is a temporary worker, filling in on the route.
Joel Oblero worked the neighborhood Tuesday. He said the demands of the job, especially for rookies on unfamiliar routes, can push carriers to extremes.
"He's looking at his watch saying 'oh my gosh I have an hour to get all this mail out and I have two hours of mail to go.' And so he does as much as he can before the deadline and I'm guessing the rest of it he stuffed in a garbage bag and threw in the ravine," said Oblero.
Postal inspectors say cases like this are very rare and are dealt with harshly.
"Well we take this very seriously. We investigate it as vigorously as we can and we ask that it be prosecuted by the US Attorney's office each time," said Postal Inspector Jeff Scobba.
The recovered mail should be delivered to its rightful recipients in a couple of weeks.
The U.S. Attorney's office in Seattle will decide what if any charges to pursue against the letter carrier. If convicted, he could face up to a year in jail.
Well look at it this way. You are a casual employee with no protection. You can dump the mail and live to work another day or you can come back late with the mail and lose your job that very day. I am suprised this doesn't happen more often.
Oh yeah it does at every apartment where the carrier doesn't stuff the ads in the mailbox but just leaves it on the ledge.
This is the problem with the managers that climb the ladder in the postal service. Training a casual carrier is limited to either one or two days then the casual worker is let loose. The true people responsible for this mess is MANAGEMENT & they seem to care about their bonuses more than the mail. In the event the carrier was the regular on the roite, the book should be thrown at him & then put away for many years. If it was a casual employee, question the manager he worked under & find out what instructions he/she was given. I have advised casuals to call in if they have problems, so that the boss will send help to see that the mail will be delivered.

SURELY THERE MUST HAVE BEEN SO INDICATION IN THIS CASUAL PERFORMANCE THAT WOULD HAVE INDICATED THAT THIS ROUTE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN DONE IN THE TIME ALLOWED WITH THE VOLUME OF MAIL TAKEN OUT ON THE DAY IN QUESTION. IF POSTAL MANAGEMENT UTILIZE THE TOOLS AT THEIR DISPOSAL THEY COULD POSSIBLY STOP ACTIONS LIKE THIS FROM REACURRING. MANAGEMENT NEEDS TO KNOW WHAT EACH CARRIER CAN AND CANT DO WHEN IT COMES TO VOLUME OF MAIL AND STREET TIMES. STOP TAKING SO MANY COFFEE BREAKS AND LEARN YOU JOBS.
This is nothing more than the natural result that occurs when carriers are squeezed beyond all reasonable limits and told by ever increasing degree that they WILL force nine pounds of shit into a one pound bags!Yes, MANAGEMENT is the culprit here! Many times they are able float new levels of "increased production" by coersing and condoning mail dumping ( though usually DELIVERABLE unendorsed standard) or by intimidating carriers to WORK OFF THE CLOCK . Then,of course , the new commers are shown these fraudulent 'models' and told that's the level of performance they need to be living up to or else they're "not cuttin' it". Meanwhile , the worthless managers are sitting at computers strategizing ever-new levels of deceit to further steal the credit for production....... and ONLY when the light of day shines in do they then jump up and say 'oh no, this is not allowed'..... THEN ,all of a sudden, their victim becomes a convenient scapegoat!

Probably trained by a steward who showed the casual how to take 5 breaks and 3 lunches during his shift. Then when the shift was getting close to the 8hr mark the casual panicked and dumped the mail. How is this managements fault??????????
Simply. If the carrier was a casual he has no steward, nor union protection. If he came back late one day management tells him if it happens again thendon't come back to work.
So the next day they give him an "hour". Only that so-called hour given away was on the route that mangement decided to clean that day. So the casual looks around and dumps the mail. Returns on time at which point management says that a boy good job I will bring you in for 6 hours instead of 4 hours tomorrow,.
there's no excuse for being dishonest. there's lots of overburdened carriers every day, but they don't throw the mail away. the person who did it is a bum.
