Rate hike impacts would be far-reaching

'The postal service is big business,' said Maynard Benjamin, president and CEO of the Envelope Manufacturers Association (EMA). 'It is 7 percent of the GNP and it accounts for 9 million jobs. Now we want to put 1.6 million jobs at risk because we want the rate payer to fund things not directly related to postal service.'

Why is it in this "900 Billion Dollar industry", that every other business can raise their rates to cover costs, but whenever the PO does, it becomes "devestating" ??

Hell, FedEx and UPS have raised their rates at least 4 times since our last hike...and not a word....

As long as we give them rates below the USPS for Express letters and ground, they wont complain. We find ways to be more efficient and expand into other markets while the USPS flounders. Thanks for being the price leader!

All this bickering is not "competition". I don't know what your problems are at UPS,FedEx,etc, but we at USPS are burdened with layers of unecessary, inept and dishonest middle mgrs. To those respondants who are not mgrs: delivery workers should stick together (a common union?) or else one of us will become the WalMart of delivery svcs. and the others out of business.

It's Ironic!!

UPS & FedEx have raised their Rates (4)times since the last Postal increase.
But see, they are the one's crying because they utilize the Postal services also.

They "don't Want" to cough up more!

You know tomatoes are up to $4 dollars @ pound and I still see people making purchases.

A 12 oz bottle of Beer in a tavern is 2.75, but see that price is OK.

Cigarettes are 3-4-5 dollars a pack-There doing a booming business, and it's killing the customer!

Four Cent increase is a "bargain" compared to my other expenses to get a letter from Coast to Coast!

Thats because UPS and FedEx are REAL BUSINESSES and the USPS is a SERVICE which we all USE as is our right as Americans. WE pay taxes, the USPS does not. USPS is our SERVICE, and should serve OUR needs.

12:47 pm, get real; this is not YOUR postal service as it might have been 20 years ago. It now belongs to the afore mentioned managers who couldn't care less about the quality of service you get as long as thier free lunch continues.

I think the USPS should be the ones laying off workers. What an overburdened labor-heavy agency the USPS is! Outsource the processing and cross-country transportation and reduce those labor costs! While the rest of the nation is downsizing, the USPS is trying to create work for itself simply to keep themselves employed. Must be nice not to have to be competitive.

Economists have pointed out that forty per cent of the "labor" costs in the post office are really in management. The post office has layers and layers of redundant managers. One of PMG Runyan's ideas was to eliminate the job of "station manager" since most of the decisions that involve stations are made at a higher level anyway. I guess this idea was too radical for the time, but eventually economic reality will force the post office to elliminate these GED "managers."

Hey 5:36PM, Management pulls the same garbage in our plant. They fire the casuals on 12/24/04 then mandate the regulars to work the 24th Xmas eve even though it is too late to send out the mail for Xmas. We dont show up. Because we are with our families. There is plenty of management that can stay and do nothing.

Cut this 6 day Delivery Bull once and for all and go to a 5 Day Operation.
Get rid of all the lousy worthless lazy Carriers, Clerks and Managers. Hand pick the best and make USPS the best. Can eliminate at least 200,000 non performers.

Postal Reform looks dead. Clerk Craft looks Dead. Lazy fat Managers still out there.Poor Performing Carriers getting OT to do work others do in 8 Hours. Really bad out here now.

No such thing as a "lazy carrier" especially at this time of year. The clerk craft is shrinking, yet management is growing.

What about the companies that are processing parcel post for the USPS? It's because we do the "last mile" better than any other company out there. That means letter carriers get the job done!

The USPS needs to get rid of the dead (management) weight and hire more carriers.

It is true that we are BIG BUSINESS. The problem is the way the service was hiring these STUPIDVISORS as the workers were retiring. The workers were never replaced, but STUPIDITY WAS HIRED, while the assignments that the retired workers did were never filled. This is what happened to the postal service as they hired the wrong people for a job that was never needed. As I have heard from several other workers, THE POSTAL SERVICE HAS MORE CHIEFS THAT INDIANS is a true statement. Today, the service needs to get rid of the chiefs, and replace them with more indians who are willing to work hard for a decent pay. The trouble today is that the HIGHER UPS look for the bonuses that they were given bypast PMG CARVIN MARVIN RUNYON, who is now in the cemetary & that is where he belongs. We also know that GEORGIE WALKIE does not want Postal Reform as it would cost the Federal Budget more funds that it Has at the present time. We all know why this mess is taking place & this can be prevented if the WHITE HOUSE STOPS STABING THE WORKERS IN THE BACK.

I just don't understand how someone can write an article when that person puts forth improper information. Who edits these guys.
1. Postal Employees are forbidden by law to stirke
2. Not one tax penny is given to the USPS
3. A Postal Reofrm Bill was passed by the House and
Senate which means it was a bipartisan agreement.
Unfortunately, King George effectively killed it.
Therefore, the failure to implement a Postal
Reform law lies squarely upon his admistration.
If this failure results in a significant negative
impact on our economy, as the author suggests,
don't blame it on the USPS. Place blame where
blame is due; on this country's recently
re-elected president.

5:18 post: While others are getting their facts straight, maybe you should also. Nothing was ever passed by Congress. Both the House and Senate came up with proposals, but these were never hammered out jointly, and the Congressmen decided it was too volatile an issue at election time. The "White House" has stated their desires, but even that may not be enough to forego what Congress now wants, but George has not killed any bill, since no bill has ever made it to him.
