The Post Office does not enforce minimum standards for behavior. I saw this the first day I started in 1973. This is true for the lowest craft people to the top managers. I have seen some of these craft and management people go on the workroom floor and act like chimpanzees - and nothing gets done about it. This behavior has become so ingrained in the postal "culture" that we accept it as normal when it is not.
A perusal of the posts at this website confirms exactly what you are saying. To call most of the people posting here "professionals" is a stretch to be sure. In fact, you have to use a loose interpretation of the word "people" to qualify them even in that regard. BFS99, this includes you.
OK, so I started in 1974, 30 years in, and counting the days until I can retire! In the "good old days", this was a GREAT place to work! The work is hard, sometimes the hours are long, sometimes the weather is inclement, ...but the difference between "then" and "now" is how we treat each other....Way back then managers pretty much let the craft people do what they needed to do on a daily basis to move the mail...no harassment, no intimidation, and no idle threats...we all got along! Now, it's no holds barred, and the thing I dislike the MOST about being in the craft, (city carrier), is that I can't say ANYTHING to my superiors that may be considered derogatory or out of line, BUT THEY HAVE FREE WILL TO BROWBEAT, INTIMIDATE, HARASS, AND DEGRADE ANY EMPLOYEE TO HIS FACE WITHOUT FEAR OF RECOURSE! The unions can't or won't help..the USPS denies any wrongdoing from their managers, so, the only option is to SUE the bastards....Costs money, takes time, but in the end if you can WIN, at least you can walk away with a little pride, and self esteem! I also agree with this ladys opinion...i.e. NO THANK YOU, I DON'T WANT MY JOB BACK...just compensate me for all of the BS that you put me through! Good luck to her
I love the comments made by craft employees about management harrassment. I have been in management almost 30 years and have had to take a lot of crap from craft employees and take it as I would have little recourse as we have been so short of help for so many years. I have bent over backwards to assist the employees in my office, only to be harrassed and embarrassed constantly.
Sex occurs in the post office with the employees every day. It is especially common with casuals and management. I have more than once caght supervisers with casuals both in straight and gay sex. Recently a young black woman was going down on a superviser who was white and middle aged. The girl was about 22 or so. They were acting so vile.
I do hope that the female carrier wins her lawsuit against the Postal Service. They deserve to be taught a monotary lesson for allowing this HARASSMENT TO TAKE PLACE. Every so often, we receive a letter from David Solomon on sexual harassment. The problem was that whem Jack Kelly was the V.P. of New York Metro,, he allowed ANTI-SEMITIC remarks by a letter carrier president to go unpunished. The same applies for the NALC President Vince Sombrotto, as this took place during his term & was allowed wiith his knowledge & his administration. He received the necessary information, but passed the buck to the then Eastern Regional National Business Agent James Dolan, & he also chose to do nothing. I do hope that the female carrier wins & teaches the Postal Service a LESSON. This is necessary to teach the service A DAMN GOOD LESSON.
