This is a common occurence in the career of a letter carrier. Who knows the neighborhood better than the person who walks it day after day?
USPS mail carriers (both city and rural) become heroes everywhere! It's nice to see the media commending them. As a city carrier, they know who is home during the day and who isn't; who is on vacation; and who is older and perhaps vulnerable. This helps them to recognize when something is suspicious or amiss. (i.e. mail accumulating in a mailbox, activity in a home when no one is supposed to be there, etc.)
I agree with the last post, it is so refreshing to hear good press about the hardworking carriers out there. Thanks to WCCO for recognizing the carrier for going above and beyond!
