What the NALC fears is a traditional route count in light of the decreasing volume of casable mail. As long as they stall on route inspections, their members can continue to get paid 8 hours for their 7 hour routes. As a front line supervisor, I am watched by my superiors to see if I match workhours to workload. It isn't in my interest to shortchange carriers on volume, I am shortchanging myself in the process. I tire of the endless accusations that I am only looking for a bonus....I am proud of the job I do, just like a carrier is proud of the job he does. Everyone knows you can't use DOIS as the sole basis for discipline, you have to have more evidence than just those figures, so stop whining and just do the job you are paid very well to do!! Thanks to the 90% who do just that!!
unfortunately, 8:04, everyone doesn't know its in everyones best interest to provide accurate information into DOIS including an allowance for the intangibles of a given day. If a carrier gives his best effort and doesn't meet DOIS projections obviously DOIS was wrong that day. As with DPS it is a misuse of what could be very useful technology as just another tool to beat carriers over the head with and the public with poor service.
Can't say I'm surprised at this-anytime management feigns cooperation with the Union and when things don't go their way they take their toys and go home-typical knee-jerk reaction on their part.
Hey NALC, how does your new and improved grievance procedure look with management now? Idiots!! Did any of you national officers really believe you could count on these liars to live up to their word? You got snookered, and now we all pay the price. Thanks losers!
The article contained herein is nothing short of pandering; is there someone that really believes this mis-information?
S999 mail is credited to the carrier on Line 21; the local memorandums that were to be "jointly" devised at the local level denigrated into some local unions wanting routes adjusted to 120% to standard and no use of 1838's or 3999's to accurately determine the value of a route.
Realistic - I don't think so. You want to work together - stop the incitful pandering. NBA's told their local union president's that if they entered into an agreement locally they would be cutting their own throats?! That's working together?
Carrier's want more money for what they do? Why not encourage your National officers to agree to evaluated routes? Why not encourage your officers to agree to other performance based incentives? Or how about casing DPS at something other than 18 pieces per minute?
They won't because they're to worried about their re-election chances.
And to those who can only post comments with four letter filth - you really think you're worth more than $45000? You dis-honer all postal employees. If your literacy level doesn't permit you to write proper grammer get a job that appreciates your in-the-gutter mentality.
NALC you have been had. How can you even think you can make a deal with liars and thieves. These scumbag managers are so corrupt why even bother to talk. STRIKE. Illegal or not, STRIKE.
The reason you cannot case DPS is because your union would not agree to having carriers case at least 20 letters per. 45000 is a lot of money and the retirement is one of the finest, if your so unhappy with your pay and retirement quit, it's as simple as that, but find another job that pays you as well, I think not but your job another whinner in the long list of whinners who have to work maybe 7 hours a day, for 8 hours of pay.
Hey 8:49 AM-City carriers case DPS mail? Oh really-I want to work in that office. And before you call people down on their alleged lack of command of the english language, learn how to spell OK? (it's grammar-NOT grammer)
I think the current cooperation between management and carriers has been truly inspiring. As postal employees, we have shown the spirit of togetherness that will continue to carry this organization to great heights. I say, lets keep up the tremendous spirit and inspect those routes with increased productivity and customer gain in mind.
As a retired carrier and station manager with 30 years in management, I've tickled pink to see my successors continuing my daily practice of trying to get at least 8 hours of work from carriers each day. As I travel around and see carriers sleeping in their vehicles, or 8 of them meeting at a fast-food restaurant for an hour for lunch (7 have to be off their route!), don't expect me to feel sorry for these lazy bastards. You deserve whatever the USPS can do to you. (and I haven't begun to describe the dirty, filthy, smelly carriers I see) . . .
2:51 I FOR ONE APPRECIATE YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO OUR CARRIER WELFARE. YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY THE PRIME REASON THE JOINT STATEMENT WAS WRITTEN.....THAT IS BEFORE THEY RAN YOU OFF. I FOR ONE SAY GOOD RIDDANCE THE POSTAL SERVICE DOES NOT NEED SLUGS LIKE YOU AT ANY LEVEL.
The limit is 35 pounds, your supervisor missed that one big time, your loops should be made longer, and 4 miles long, that's it? Your route must be in the rockies or somewhere like that in order for you to have a park and loop route only four miles long.
You people don't know how good you have it, you case very few letters now, automation does that for you, you don't have to manully forward removals, cfs does that for you, you don't even have to put flats on your ledge some clerks does that for you, your first pull is made by some clerk gee everyone doing work for you, all you have to do is stroll around and put mail in a mailbox. Thousands upon thousands of people are waiting for high paying PO jobs and you whine.
Hey boss I got all these parcels today I'm going to need at least a hour. Boss says how many do you have. Employee replies 23. Boss looks at count sheet and says you averaged 12 on inspection at an average of 2 minutes each. I will allow you 22 minutes OT, no more. End of story.
Go ahead and strike you whining unproductive carriers. You will be replaced wth younger more intelligent workers in a heart beat. UnSkilled labor is easy to hire.
As a retired postal supervisor I agree with the retired carrier/manager about trying to get 8 hours worth of work out of postal employees. For the most part I noticed a lack of work ethics in craft employees. I am sure most of that was union induced. I would wager that 99.9% of all postal employees come in with a great attitude and go downhill in a hurry.
A carrier makes $45K now? For doing work an orangutan can do? Give me a break. Bunch of lazy ass whiners.
Seems to me the biggest "lazy-ass whiners" are supervisors or retired supervisors and most supervisors are ones who couldn't hack it in the craft so they took the easy way out and went into management instead. But you were right about one thing about attitudes and I have to say that yes I did have a great attitude when I came to the USPS to the point I went to work there with the express purpose of eventually entering the management ranks someday. That great attitude was destroyed within weeks by my simply seeing how people were treated like s**t by the supervisors. I've been here almost 19 years and can anyone name one thing that USPS management has done to make my job as a letter carrier less of the daily struggle it is? It seems that to most managers giving your best is NEVER good enough; all they want is MORE. I'll be damned if I put more money in your pocket in the form of a bonus (and don't tell me that system donsn't exist anymore-it's just a horse of a different color that's all) by breaking my damned tail anymore than I am and for what? Just so you can take more money out of mine? Remember the old saying that those who can't teach? Well, in the USPS, those who can't manage. I'm sorry folks but this dog won't hunt!
Yes management does receive pay for performance upon many factors. But management does not get COLA or pay raises like the unions do automatically. About 12 years ago the unions were offered a plan to receive bonuses for the employees but they turned it down.
I wish you would go out on a strike, remember what President Reagan did the ones who went on strike to the government, canned them, so go on strike you loser and see what happens to your job. Remember, your unions don't want a strike because they gave that up for job security, so if you hate it and hate your supervisors quit you ignorant moron, or does your job pay you too much that doesn't even require a high school education.
I agree with above Post. Go on Strike you lazy losers. That Post about Unskilled labor hits the nail on the head. Everyone can be replaced including Management. But Carriers are a dime a dozen. Yes we are PAID FOR PERFORMANCE. Again stop your whining. You all can have the same thing. But you all want your automatic 1.5% raise and COLA. Im getting a 8% Raise in Jan. Thanks to all the hard working Carriers and Go Scratch to all the other lazy Bums.....Go Strike. Goodbye Losers...
My experience in the PO is 38 years, 22 has a carrier and 16 as a supervisor from a large office of 68 city routes. Most of the carriers suck it up and do their jobs no matter what, the slackers are the biggest whinners and most should have been fired during their probationary period but for some reason, were not, I'm under the conclusion that the ones who whine the most in this comment section fall into this catagory. As for supervisors wherever you go everyone has a boss, so get with the program and just do your jobs.
When first hired all employees go through orientation. You are told of the pay and of what the job entails. You pursued your goal of working for the PO now all you want to do is complain because the PO wants you to work for eight hours, WOW is that unique or what.
Gee 18 and 8 and 70, too bad this isn't piece work you'd make about 2.00 and hour, and that's at the slowest speed, how many of you slackers can't even perform that turtle speed?
To all you supervisors and postmasters critical of our wages, remember that what you get has always been linked to what we get. Also there aren't many places where people with a high school education and an unwillingness to work have the opportunity to be "promoted" to management positions that pay what you get. Don't let your necktie fool you.
Hey people, A traditional route inspection is GOOD news. The cases have been chopped to bits with cramming everything in 5 shelves. Office productivity has nosedived with two handed casing, double, sometimes triple handling of mail, two and three pull downs and even double deliveries because it all just doesn't fit. Tubs of flats scattered about the workroom floor and when it's time to clean it up they give out v time like candy. Y'all gettin' the picture here?
The traditional system for route inspections ia a good one. Problem is that when they are done unilaterally they are a disaster, when they are done jointly it's been my experience that they are fair and both carriers and management have been happy with the results.
The animosity displayed in many of the above comments proves the need for a better system of inspecting routes. Much of that animosity is the result of routes adjusted using the old system of route inspections. A move back to the same old system will only achieve the same old results - confrontation. Nobody wins and we can look forward to many more years of this childish bashing of each other.
Wake up. It's $46,460 & $47,545. Every brilliant mgmt. "plan" gives me a greater opportunity to make money.I'll survive this latest attempt atrunning the "plays" as they call them. Remember, take 2(hrs.OT) and hit to right.
Your all beating a DEAD Horse. The people really winning are the direct mailers that have the ear of the President and Postmaster General. Oh and by the way meet your new carrier and supervisor a robot. http://world.honda.com/news/2004/c041215.html
the carriers union has been sleeping with management for the past 10 years 15 years... and now.. they don't get kissed before they get screwed .. and they whine. Glad to be in the APWU. suck ass carriers!!
Isn't it funny...the more things change, ( and things have changed a shitload in the 30 years I have been employed by this circus)..the more they remain the same! I'll take my new route inspection after the first of the year by the "book" the handbooks and manuals, thank you very much! Yes, I'll take the small volume, the lying, cheating, and distorting of the numbers that will show my route is under 8 hrs, and then I will continue to do the route as I have done every day for 30 years, and take as long as it takes on any given day to get it done! Bite me, or let me retire early,....otherwise, I'm here for as long as I feel like it! And if you want to screw with the bull, you will get the horns! I might have been born last night, but it wasn't late last night! I have all of my cards in my deck! I am flying on all cylinders! I didn't just fall off a pumpkin wagon! And, don't bring you're knife to a gunfight! Still standing after over 30 years, and have seen HUNDREDS of so called "managers" come and go! All this "postal reform" chit chat is pure BS...this is the biggest beauracracy in the Government, and even chicken George won't be able to change it!
I must admit that I was not disappointed reading the comments above. They underscore the problems in today's Postal Service. Hard line union carriers and frustrated postal managers. What a mix!Obviously when you look for the worst in someone, you usually find it. My solution is simple. Evaluate the city roputes, hire more supervisors to insure the carriers perform as paid. The best road to honest work is close management!
Hire more stupidvisors? We have too many already. Besides if I go by the M39 and M41 they can't do anything to me, let it be one or a hundred stupidvisors. If the numbers are good in an office, the stupidvisors go around and pat each other backs. But if the numbers are bad, then it must be the lazy carriers. See you stupidvisors on route checks.
12:45 a.m., good idea! More people who don't touch the mail to stand around a computer monitor and drink coffee. Besides the coffee they already suck up 40% of our labor costs.
It is quite telling from the above comments. The postal service is in trouble and it's not all management's fault.
Some of it is, sure, but noone is more selfish and guilty of sucking the sugar teat than the APWU. What a worthless union. What have they done for you lately?
Oh, I meant besides costing jobs and holding up progress...
Hey lazy carriers, I here McDonalds is hiring. You don't have to work outside and you can make your own schedule. If working at the PO is so bad then quit!!
HEY 951 -- GO AHEAD AND PUT DOWN ANOTHER CRAFT INSTEAD OF DEFENDING YOURSELVES. I HAVE SEEN MAITAINENCE PEOPLE WORKING HARDER THAN ANYONE AND REPAIRING SOMTHING IN THE COLD THAT YOU GUYS WOULD RETURN TO THE POST OFFICE INSTEAD. WE ALL WORK HARD. BUT YOU THINK YOU GUYS WORK HARDER. I WORKED AS A PTF CARRIER YEARS AGO AND FINISHED THE ROUTE IN 1/2 THE TIME. OF COURSE I DID NOT TAKE LUNCH BREAKS THAT GO 2 HOURS, GOING SHOPPING INSTEAD OF WORKING, GOING TO WORK OUT AT BALLEYS AFTER DOING 2 HRS WORTH OF WORK THAT THEY HAVE WHINNED ABOUT TAKING THEM 4 HOURS TO DO AND GET OT ALSO. TRY WORKING THE WINDOW WITH NO EXTRA HELP WITH LINES THAT GO OUT THE DOOR, AND THEN ONLY GET 1/2 LUNCH IF YOUR LUCKY. TRY GETTING UP AT MIDNIGHT TO GET ALL THE MAIL TO YOU GUYS BY A CERTAIN TIME, WITH LESS PEOPLE TO WORK WITH BECAUSE MGNT. HAS CUT BACK ON CLERK JOBS. YOUR TIME IS COMING. 15,000 ROUTES WERE RELIVED FROM THE STATE OF TEXAS. THE REST OF YOU ARE NEXT. THEY NEED EVALUATED ROUTES LIKE THE RUAL CARRIERS. THAT'S THE ONLY FAIR WAY FOR THEM TO CONTINUE WORKING WITH FIRST CLASS VOLUMES GOING DOWN. EVERYTHING ELSE IS UP. 2004 PHYSICAL YEAR WE ALL DID MORE MAIL THAN ANY PREVIOUS YEARS. NUFF SAID. HAPPY HOLIDAYS.
To any non-postal people who read these posts, I want to apologize to you for the perception you may have after reading post after post of this garbage. These comments for the most part DO NOT REFLECT the majority of hard working carriers and clerks, mailhandlers and maintenance people and yes, management. In my 31 years as both a craft employee and manager I want to assure you that the majority of USPS employees are hard working, honest, caring, and dedicated and are some of the best people I have ever worked with. To the carrier who cases up the endless volumes of mail and then braves the weather everyday, to the clerk who works some of the most physically demanding night shifts and unloads trucks and moves tons of mail, to the mailhandler who does nothing but back breaking manual labor on windy cold docks, to the maintenance people who clean up after us and fixes machines that are so complex I can not even describe how they work, to the supervisor who is bombarded everyday with new programs and new expectaions and a workload that is impossible to tackle and is helplessly outnumbered by employees who for 5 to 6 hours aren't even in the office, to the station managers and postmasters who try to satisfy the public, employees and their bosses, to all of you I salute you and I want our customers to know that we are doing the job everyday no matter what. The minority who post this poison does not represent the USPS. We have hard jobs and difficult working conditions but we are well paid, well compensated and we are thankful for the support of the American Public. I have had some difficult times in the USPS over the years but I also have had a lot of good times, memorable times and made friends I will cherish forever. My USPS salary allowed me to buy a great house, raise a family comfortably and put two daughters through college. Yes the job is no picnic, but it is a steady job and for that I am thankful. To all of the above mentioned employees I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. To all of our customers who read these posts, thank you for your business and rest assured that the men and women of the United States Postal Service are on the job and will continue to be on the job for as long as you permit us. Thank you
As a manager with 24 years in operations, I was distressed to read of our withdrawal from this process. Things have been the best they have ever been, since we (steward and I ) have actually worked together to make our large inner city office a better place . We have agreed that we will continue to shield our office from higher level interference to the best of our combined ability . We both fear however , that mandated actions from above ( President and POOM) will make this very difficult . I love the post office and I have some truly courageous employees. Pray that the steward and I can continue in our quest to protect our people and our service .
9:13am I've always believed that somewhere out there must be a decent human being in postal management with the courage and good sense to deport himself as you say you have. Thanks, may you go far.
Thanks for the kind words, 10:21. The only far place I want to go now is into retirement in five years . It was 10 degrees out today and no one plows very well in my city .I am in awe of the ability of our carriers to deliver safely door to door in places that most people wouldn't drive through alone. God bless you all . (BTW, `he' is female)

Fuck you and your bush

What planet are you coming from? 45 thousand/year is lower middle class & retirement sucks. WAKE UP

Thank you
Ditto Above
Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, whichever it is.
