The good news, Mr. Burrus, is that these millions of credit solicitations and other offers, tend to generate additional First Class revenue by respondents who send the Business Reply Envelope back through the mailstream, and for those who do accept such offers, additional mailings, in the form of First Class payments or other correspondence. generate additional FC revenue. And each time someone signs up for offers, their name and address get sold to other mail-generating offers. I might add that, as the PMG has already stated, we need to attract business needed to compensate for the loss of FC revenue to the internet. As with many industries, you must attract business with some low rate product lines, in order to bring in business at the higher end product line. The APWU is a great organization, representing a great group of dedicated Postal employees and there are many times when you are right on the mark with your criticism of the Postal Service; however, I do not believe that this criticism is well founded. In a era of lay-offs and downsizing, we all need the Service to continue well into the future. Its a great job, and I love it.

I am a Postmaster and I agree with Mr. Burrus. I am so sick of getting 5-digit trays that perfectly well could have been DPS'ed at a lot lower cost; and also Carrier-route letters that could have been run with the DPS. My carriers feel this way too.

I Hope you love your job as I do mine.. But I do see the huge difference between 9 cents and 37 cents. Especially when multiplied by millions.. I also can't justify the treatment of our core customers at the counterline who have to pay full price and wait in line 30 or more minutes to do it.. We are discussing a rate increase at a time when our biggest discounted mailers are making the biggest gains in their history. RE:Advo in Forbes last year.. I don't think Burris is all wrong by any means.

Mr. Burrus did not say we should charge the bulk mailers the full first class rate -- he just suggests they should pay their fair share. If postal equipment and personnel can sort the letters for 10 cents, why should we be giving the mailers a 20 cent discount for pre-sorting?

One of the bigger drains on postal profitability has to be the mailers who carpet the landscape with poorly-designed mailpieces which take carriers 2-3 times as long to handle as a typical letter. THESE mailers should be paying a premium over first class rates for the extra effort needed to handle their mailings.

It is difficult to handle and deliver. We, carriers, waste a tremendous amount of time and effort on mailings, which obviously pay much less than they cost us in effort and time, which equals DOLLARS, many many wasted DOLLARS. The other drawback of these mailings, which are so trashy is that the USPS and it's carriers become associated with delivering "TRASH" and therefore the entire USPS becomes tarnished by being equated to the same "TRASH" which we deliver. Ergo, we need to have mailers pay their fair share and we need to search for a product to deliver which the recipient values. We need to serve the people we deliver to. We need them to welcome the product, which we deliver to them. Unfortunately, other than EBAY shipments and welfare checks, we don't seem to offer much that the public really does welcome.

I can't say it any better. Lets add to the crap list those aol disks in their too thick boxes. They can't be cased and they don't fit in most mailboxes or go thru the mail slots. If efficiency is a priority, give me a product that will fit our cases, trays and ultimately into the customer's mail receptacle.

Nothing frustrates me worse than to come home in the evening and attempt to pull the odd sized and shaped bulk mail garbage out of my box. If it is letter size or a normal flat size I look at it but this trash bulk mail these mailers are mailing like that garbage marriage mail I throw away right outside in my garbage can, it tears as you try to remove it and then falls in the street. YES THESE MAILERS WHO MAIL THIS TRASH SHOULD BE CHARGED DOUBLE.

Everyone who mails a letter, is paying their full share of thr mails. What we are doing is offering the BIG MAILERS a discount as they are putting the mail in Zip Code order for the mail to be sent to the carriers ASAP. As we are a SEMI QUAISI OUTFIT we have to make certain that all are fine & dandy. This is the way the Postal Service should be run & operated by these same Idiots who are only anxious to get this over with it.

William Burris, you will never be a Morris "MOE" Biller who I believe was a better president of the APWU than you are at present. At least Moe understood what the workings of the old POD & the new USPS. It took you several months to visit your unionpeople after the ANTHRAX situation hit the Trenton, N.J. post office. What you showed these union members was what I considered a case of STUPIDITY BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT. Many of your union people were so disgusted with what you said when you finally showed up. I read about the death of the two Washington, D.C. workers, & the comment you should have made was that, " I WAS NEEDED IN THE D.C. AREA DUE TO THE DEATH OF THE TWO POSTAL WORKERS & WANTED TO FIND OUT WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.
Now you know what I think of you. STUPIDITY LIKE WHAT YOU WANT WILL NOT HAPPEN. ALL UNIONS MUST WORK TOGETHER TO HELP THE POSTAL SERVICE SURVIVE.
REMEMBER IT WILLIAM BURRIS
