After reading the article, I was not surprised that the post office was shut down. The missmanagers will look for some real reason to keep the office closed, while having the patrons travel to another town to get their mail. This reminds me of the anthrax incident that took place in Trenton, New Jersey. The service took their time in closing the post office especially after a few people did get sick, but everyone did recover & are back at work. I do hope that the post office will re-
open ASAP. We will have to wait & see what takes place, as no one knows what the CHIEF IDIOT will do.

Looking at this logically, these people had mail delivery while the post office was up and running correct? So why not move whomever was delivering their mail to the other post office and just have them deliver from the office that is 8 miles away. Sure its extra miles but I think the customers would be happy. Any thoughts?

Well 8:23, I can think of a couple of reasons why your perfectly reasonable solution won't fly. First, there may not be room in the other facility for carrier cases and trucks. Not to mention the addition logistical support to absorb the additional workload. There are a lot of factors involved in moving just a few routes to a different facility, i.e. truck scheduling, plant involvement, what to do with the extra doughnut-munching bosses, etc.
Second, I highly doubt the brainiac managers would be able to compute the extra distance and travel time into their god DOIS.Budget, not service is the primary focus of today's postal managers, so anything that might cost more, even a little, would never get off the ground.

Well, you have obviously had some bad experience with the postal service or are a craft employee. Anyway, speaking as a postal manager, I know for a fact every post office is SUPPOSE to have a disaster/emergency plan for their office which is to include a place where they would be able to operate in full capacity should their current facility be rendered unusable. This would be one of those cases, I should think, so where is their 2nd facility? And assuming they don't have a second facility to operate out of, they are currently in the Fort Dodge office and SOMEONE extra is there working that mail so I don't see the staffing issue. As for room for a case, for goodness sake, this town services 575 people. I would say this is what, a 1 route office? You can't find room in a corner of some office around there that has enough room for one case? Transportation - lets see, the mail is obviously getting to Fort Dodge since they are currently putting it in lobby boxes there so what is the issue. The mail was also getting delivered normally before this PO was shut down so what is the delivery driver doing now? As for DOIS - They would just have to deal with it. It is possible to change DOIS and make the milage correct, especially in a situation such as this. And even if it wasn't correct, I think if the people had approval from higher up, the deviation would be understandable. In short, it is a possible, and I think smart idea, for them to do.

With 575 people , I would say this is a non delivery post office, no carriers at all, just P O BOX and General Delivery service, and probably one employee with a relief backup person, it would seem to me they could find a emergency back up building and should have planned for an emergency back up building in their own town.
