NALC responds to Bush accusations against letter carriers

The Bush campaign has accused carriers of "failing to deliver election mail in Florida and other states 'from homes that appear Republican'". NALC President Bill Young responded "It is a shame the Bush-Cheney campaign chose to denigrate the reputation of hard-working letter carriers across the nation by publicizing these unsubstantiated rumors without any evidence of their validity. The Bush-Cheney campaign owes every letter carrier in America an apology."

Letter To Postmaster General John Potter On Ballot Mail Integrity

To: Interested Parties
From: Bush-Cheney '04 Communications
Date: 10/20/04
Re: Letter To Postmaster General John
Potter On Ballot Mail Integrity

Bush-Cheney '04 General Counsel Tom Josefiak today sent the following letter on ballot mail integrity to United States Postmaster General John Potter.

Letter To Postmaster General John Potter

Mr. John Potter
Postmaster General
United States Postal Service
475 L’Enfant Plaza, SW
Washington, DC 20260-0010

Dear Mr. Potter:

Recently the Bush-Cheney campaign received anecdotal reports that mail carriers in Florida and elsewhere have suggested that they would consider failing to deliver ballot materials from homes that “appear Republican.” This type of behavior is both morally reprehensible and illegal.

I write to seek your assurance that all employees of the United States Postal Service appreciate the importance of delivering ballot and election materials as quickly as possible, regardless of the perceived partisan affiliation of the voter. Given the large number of absentee ballots expected in this election, it is crucial that individual mail carriers understand their important role in the protection of our democracy.

With this concern in mind, I respectfully request that you issue a reminder to USPS employees that all election and balloting materials should be delivered expeditiously, without regard to partisan affiliation. Voters in America must be able to trust their mail carriers not to slow or destroy absentee ballots or absentee ballot applications.

I would greatly appreciate any information you can offer on this topic, especially regarding past actions your office has taken to ensure the integrity of ballot mail. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact my office.

Sincerely,

Thomas J. Josefiak
General Counsel
cc: David Williams
USPS Inspector General

Anecdotal reports? We all know this administraion does not believe in dealing with facts. The war is probably due to anecdotal reports! They do owe every letter carrier an apology!

There is no doubt in my mind that they will be trashing the mail. The do it without haveing much need, like in just plain lazy

this is a move by our union to post lies. bill young is one big lie. he think all the mailcarriers are idiots.he thinks that we will believe him.maybe you want to suck some baby's brain out of their head like kerry does . why dont you tell us about all the lies that kerry tells us. bill young you are a fool.
bill young you are telling lies like your candidate john kerry. you constantly lie to us carriers. we need the teamsters to replace the nalc. you lie, the local president lies and most of the union officials lies.

Anonymous said...

Just like the Teamsters, huh? You're a bigger idiot than anyone I've met. The Teamsters just sold out on their pension plan for the Southern Region. The membership will receive about half of what the rest of the country gets. If you don't believe me, since I'm a local Vice President of the NALC, ask your UPS driver. You're just like Bush, wrong facts, and you can't spell either.

It's sad this President and his people have stooped so low. Time and time again this administration has hit Letter Carriers over the head with a 2x4 and there are some among us who still support him. Just today I delivered, yet again, more of the doctored picture of Sen. Kerry and Jane Fonda. A picture the RNC said was altered, yet the postage was from the RNC. If you tell a lie enough times it becomes the truth? Every one of those ads were delivered because its my job.

A young man or woman enlists in the U.S. armed Forces to protect our country. To defend it. 18, 19, 20 years old they are sent to fight an unjust war in Iraq. Another child is lost in vain. BAN PARTIAL LIFE ABORTIONS. RE-DEFEAT BUSH NOVEMBER 2ND!

ANY LETTER CARRIER THAT FALLS FOR THIS UNION PROPAGANDA
IS PRETTY BAD OFF. HARD TO BELIEVE THE UNION WOULD BE
AS DESPERATE AS THE HEINZ KETCHUP MILLIONAIRE SEEKING POWER AT ANY COST. THIS IS THIRD WORLD TYPE OF PROPAGANDA..IT'S ALSO THE NEW NALC, SO THERE ARE NO SURPRISES THERE.

President Bush You owe Me a Huge Apology.... I do my Job, wish I could say the same for you........

I am not any of the idiots who actually believe everything they are told or read, Both Parties have faults, Both individuals have faults, and yes our Union has faults, But those of you who insist that your ranting here is anything to be taken seriously are clearly showing how uninformed you are. I for one cannot believe anyone in thier right mind can look at the facts and vote for Shrub, I mean Bush... The man is a babbling Idiot who has no clue. I served 15 years in the Army and another 6 in the national Guard and Reserves, He started an unnecessary War, for fabricated reasons, with no plan to bring the country out of it anytime soon. He is not and never will be a Commander in Chief. People want to Bash Kerry for attending and speaking out against a war in which he served, I say give him another set of Medals to throw at Bush. I will gladly throw mine at the Shrub if given the chance. Do I support the Troops... Hell Yes, Send them all the money and equipment they need, use the Repealed Tax cuts to fund them, I will even add $500 of my savings account to help get them home faster.

As for Our Union President, has he made mistakes? Yes.. will he make more? yes.. After all he is human... The real problem with our union rests with members who don't like things unless they get everything they want. You want change? Step forward and make it happen, I have served in every Branch capacity Health Benefits Represenative, Steward, Treasurer, Vice President of a single Branch, the Same position in a Merged Branch and my first Term as Merged Branch President will be starting soon. I have only been in the Postal Service and NALC 9 years, But I have had an impact locally because I stepped up to the plate with fresh ideas and an open mind. Bottom line is simple, talk as loud as you want, but people will never take you serious, because of your slanted views on life, you are the worst kind of wrong because unless it revolves around you and your beliefs it is wrong.. You are not worthy of calling yourself a Union Brother or sister...

The Bush-Cheney'04, Inc is laying the legal ground work to contest the November election. They are actively soliciting funds for the "Compliance Committee". They will plant "seeds of doubt" in the few key states that will decide the election. If the absentee ballot numbers are close enough, they will blame "John Kerrey and his liberal freinds in the Postal Service" of voiding Bush's victory. The first seed is the October 20, 2004 letter. The second seed is the state of Florida where brother Jeb won't be able to deliver a victory for his brother. "The check is in the mail" excuse doesn't work wilt bill colllectors, and "the vote is in the mail" won't work with the american people.

As a union member, I appreciate the efforts of the union to make my job better and more secure. Having said that, I am voting for my kids, who don't work for the postal service. One is a college student(working her way through school-no grants, no aid), the other is now in Qatar seving his country. Bush, while not by any means perfect, is my choice to lead the country. His values come much closer to those I feel necesary for our country to survive and prosper. Vote your choice.

let me get this straight,,someone from the bush campaign write a letter to PMG POTTER and accuses the letter carriers in certain states of not derlivering the mail..bill young responds on your behalf and somehow this is a deliberate attempt by the nalc and mr. young to fool you and stick it in your back...dam w mustlove you guys....

Quatro anos mas. Four more years. Kerry could not polish W's boots. Carriers and Young quit your whinning.

Anonymous said...

I'm afraid our union will jump on anything to get rid of Bush. Had it been the Dem's writing a letter of concern, based upon the information that they had, the union would have not said a word. What they are concerned about probably has happened or is happening in a few isolated incidents. Anyone who is concerned about mail delivery can write a letter, no big deal. They are not calling the majority of letter carriers dishonest, they just want to know what is being done to make sure that this isn't happening. Grow up people.

Anonymous said...

If they have any actual evidence of improper behavior, they should pursue it. If it is just rumors and innuendo, well, anybody can make that stuff up.

Anonymous said...

Quatro anos mas. Without the tilde or use of a "y" that little translation becomes," Four more anuses." Which ones could they be? LOL! Quatro anyos mas es correcto! Pero es mi no agradable. Viva Kerry y Edwards!

I see mail delayed all the time. It's always because there is some discrepancy with the address. A lot of people in this country just don't know how to address a letter. Having said that, I think this alleged "problem" is a charade. It looks like Nixon's "dirty tricks" people are still at work.

Anonymous said...

Just more lies from Bush. The WMD lie wasnt enough. Now he is putting down Mail Carriers with more lies. I dont think Bush knows what the truth is anymore.

The time has arrived to call a spade a spade. JFKerry has never been a person of moral fiber. He acts like a girlie man when it comes to W and he is the one that did not receive an Honorable Discharge from the Navy back in 1971, when his 6 year committment was finished.
It was the communist peanut farmer, Jimmy Carter, who in 1978 reissued him an Honorable Discharge after a Board of Review had met. Carter had all his ribbons and medals reissued to Kerry also. That's what is called Daddy looking out for his pelon. The only liar in this campaign is the antiamerican, liberal, communist Kerry.

Who would Osama vote for?- obviously, George W. Bush! He has done more to help Al Qaeda than anyone else. First he bungles the effort to catch bin Laden, then he decides to invade Iraq, which had no connection to al Qaeda. Now, after thousands of Iraquis and Americans have been killed, Iraq is overrun with terrorists, and groups allied with Al Qaeda run large parts of the country. Not to mention that the mess Bush has made of Iraq has provided the best recruiting material bin Laden could have hoped for!

I retire next year after 25 years as a carrier. Can't remember a single year that some political mail was NOT delayed post-election. Yes, I'm sorry to say that we are just as imperfect as the politicians. But, unlike the politicians who intentionally lie to get your vote, I choose to believe that we do not intentionally delay the mail. You vote for whom you will, but I choose national security as my main concern. Nothing else matters, ie. job, family, retirement, quality of life, if we the people glow in the dark or suffer WMD attacks. Vote Bush, not Francois Kerry, because the UN should never dictate when and where we protect this great USA.

Anonymous said...

I am a retired postal employee who served proudly for the service for thirty three years. It is insulting to the Florida carriers to suggest that they would delay any political mailing. How many stand up talks have you heard about the fact that political mailings ( bright red tags) are to be expedited and treated as first class mail? If you are like most carriers you not only hear it but supervisors and managers keep reminding us of the fact ad nauseum. The letter carriers in Florida, many of them, must be working under terrible stress because of the hurricanes. Customers have lost their homes, as well as, many carriers. Post offices have been badly damamged. All this disruption creates a huge burden on a person but as you know we letter carriers rise to the challenge again and again and move those "mountains" of mail. No none of these dedicated men and women letter carriers of Florida needed to be maligned during this particulrly difficult time in their career. I am sure their are huge numbers of customers who have had their mail temporarily forwarded. What is forwardable? First class mail and second class mail. Technically speaking, the people whose mail is on forward wouldn't have received their political mailings for all the right reasons----because the job is being done correctly. Thank you letter carriers in Florida for all you are doing in these challenging times. You are in our thoughts and our prayers.

We have a republican as president, the republicans control both the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate. That would tell me that the NALC should be trying to work with them because they might all remain in power. In all fairness to the NALC they have done a good job influencing both house and senate members. Postal reform would pass both the house and the senate but the president said he would not sign it. NALC President Bill Young endorses John Kerry so of course the White House has reason to believe that mail might not be delievered in Florida. Even though I am a republican I hope Kerry wins because as a carrier, I need my job and think that the NALC has burn some bridges especially with the White House. Way to go Bill Young.

The incredible irony here is that the Bushoin morons do even realize most PO employees are in fact neo-cons.

...Made up of military hillbilly's that aren't about to let go of their lifetime of public welfare.

Good news fot Buhsy though, they're also very forgiving. Juts up that disability percentage a couple of clicks and all is forgiven.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I wonder why hillbillies are so conservative. Must be their lack of education. Republicans can't get elected on the issues so they run around spouting platitudes about "family values" and religion. Simple minded people fall for this and vote Republican.

Anonymous said...

Don't know why the Bush camp is complaining. It is true that mail may not be being delivered, it has nothing to do with the election. It has everything to do with the postal managers and supervisors that have to make their numbers to receive their bonuses. On any given day you can walk into my post office and find mail that is up to a week old sometimes more. With people working more than sixty hours a week to cover open routes and no help being hired, is it any wonder why the Postal Service is being blamed for mail not being delivered in a timely fashion. Most supervisors just look at the postage insignia that says BULK RATE and assume that they can cut it for a few days. So, to President Bush and Senator Kerry the postal service is not just slowing down your mailers, it is a nationwide epidemic! And I think most people by now know who the candidates are, get out and VOTE!

Damn... Looks like they're on to us bubba!

This happens all the time in a certain Zip code in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. It's sick and it's true. It is a difficult thing to catch a carrier doing but it does happen. Regardless of what party your for these incidents are very one sided. Their party and goons need to wake up. Their debauchery is destroying our country.

What is it going take? Bush and Chaney do not care about us! Some people have commented about Bush's family values, He IS SENDING OUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS TO DIE. FOR WHAT? My son is in stationed in Iraq and this administration doesn't even provide the basic armor for his protection. WAKE UP!!! You will be looking for your family values from the street if this idiot get re-elected. How naive can you be?

Anonymous said...

I know what you mean. This is how it was in Viet Nam. We were so gung ho about fighting the "enemy." And we didn't even know who the enemy was. The enemy was our own stupidity. The war in Iraq will be recorded as one of the biggest blunders in history.

Anonymous said...

This is the most ridiculous thing I've seen. I have not heard this and as a Postal worker there is no way we would not deliver the mail, this is probably the Demorats stirring up trouble. Tell me this, are the candidates still getting their mail? How about a thank you!

It is amazing with the mess this country is in that people will actually vote for this idiot we have for a President. You have the reasons not to all around you, gas prices, job excessing, deficits, wars in Iraq, health care costs. And some still vote for this guy Dubya Bush. They even vote for him when he is the one responsible for Postal Reform not going through this year.. IT'S YOUR JOB! And Bush could care less if there is a Postal Service at all!

No, these blind people will sink this nation by trying to reelect this idiot into office to destroy this nation for another four years..

Here in Tucson, at last months union meeting, I overheard some carriers speaking of doing exactly what the Bushies are accusing us of. There is so much seething hate for Bush, so much fear of losing our jobs, so much fear of not being able to abort babies, the list is endless, that carriers in Tucson are also trashing ballots from the foothills area.

Anonymous said...

C,mon Roland...I'm here in Tucson too, and we all know that no one is trashing anything...You've been listening to Rush for so long that your brain is fried, and it's OK though because when KING GEORGE gets re-elected, right after you pee your pants with glee, you will see your job as a letter carrier disappear, {unless of course you have other talents that may keep you employed}!
Vote YOUR JOB...and since you apparently don't realize that your job as a letter carrier has allowed you to talk your smack, maybe after the election you will not be so vocal!
If ANY LETTER CARRIER IS OBSERVED, OR CAUGHT THROWING AWAY ANY DELIVERABLE BULK MAIL, POLITICAL, OR OTHERWISE, THEIR ASS IS OUT THE DOOR!
Call the stoolies at the RNC, or the OIG, and have them come into all the stations here for a full inspection!
And while you're at it, ask them why all those flats in white tubs with all those color codes on top of them are still on the floor???
I am impressed with you Roland, however, that you do have internet access, and that you do know how to type.....That makes you dangerous, and if Bush gets re-elected, I might have to turn you in as a "marginal" citizen!

One of the major problems that Union Leaders express is the movement away from the Union. Now the Union uses our Union funds to promote kerry in our monthly flyer and in the two first class mailings I recieved this month. Promoting Kerry with my money is a violation of my personal morals. My Union dues have been spent to promote a Presidential candidate who supports the killing of unborn babies, was a traitor to America during the Vietnam War, voted to send my son to war and then voted against the needed funding to support my son while he served in Iraq. This Union is only representing half of it's members and should remember this as the cause for lost members in the coming years.

This letter was written inorder to commit distrust among the citizens of this nation against the USPS.
This would have worked, but I am certain that Postmaster Potter is not that dumb. When he told NALC President Young & showed him the letter, Bill Young was right in his response against the President, as he did truly show STUPIDITY BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT. As for the letter writer, Thomas J. Josefick, I am certain that no one he knows ever carried mail in his family. this is the perfect example of how to tell lies to the public. Unfortunately, the postal workers should now band together and DEMAND AN APOLOGY FROM THE ASSHOLE PRESIDENT, GEORGIE WALKIE BUSH.
HISTORY WILL EVENTUALLY SHOW THE STUPIDITY OF THIS ADMINISTRATION BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT.
Come November 2, 2004, this country should send GEORGIE WALKIE on a very long vacation.
A CAPITAL CITY CARRIER, WHO DELIVERS THE MAIL

It is amazing that almost all of the posts against President Bush contain profanity or name calling. This reflects directly to the child-like mental state of the writers who are either incapable or unwilling to understand the actual true facts and thus resort to character assasination. As for the writer who said you should vote your job, I have one thing to say. Ask the 3,000 people killed on 9/11 if they would rather have their job or their life.

This is to the last Post. The attach on 9-11 was a direct result of the Republican Administration the has been screwing the Middle east for the past 30 + years. I'm not saying its rite as a matter of fact, its the most terrible thing that happened to those people!!!
I just suprised it didn't ahppen sooner. That doesn't make it rite.

In regards to the last post, you might want to get your facts straight. Bin Laden felt he could attack the U.S. and get away with it. In his own words he said he thought the U.S. was weak because we had failed to respond to the previous attacks on the World Trade Center, the USS Cole etc. under President Clinton. To somehow say we deserved it is idiotic. To say we showed weakness to our enemy and were then attacked is accurate. Thank God we have a president like Bush. If Kerry becomes our next president we had better start praying to God and not thanking him.

This is the same old worn out argument the GOP spins every day. We need someone in office who can LISTEN to good information and advice from people other than his own party affiliation for the war on terror. We need a President with BRAINS in office. Too many mistakes have been made the last four years and America cannot afford another four years more of them. This war on terror requires the participation of the WHOLE WORLD in fighting it, not just the United States. Until we get Bush out of office, the world will not be involved like they should be. Bush is a divider, not a uniter..
