Under the Radar Screen

"There should be no doubt that under Postmaster General Jack Potter's leadership the U.S. Postal Service has learned how to spot and cut out some of its own fat. Potter's USPS is much leaner than it's been under any PMG before him."

Mail has no value except advertising.

There's no doubt that USPS' most important role is economic stimulus. And, there's no doubt that Gene doesn't know how to beat a different drum. -ucanit

As with enron its just smoke and mirrors. The leaner are the carriers working manditory overtime everyday and their days off, because routes are not adjusted or PTFs heired. Looking at most Managers girth their is some irony to the statement of "spot and cut out some of its own fat.

With emphasis on the word "some".

Keep espousing the values of buggy whips while we all drive by you. The bills may come by mail (deeply discounted presorted mail, like UPS bills) but more and more they dont come back by mail. Corporations and large mailers will own the USPS one day.

Yes, this is true, but what Jack potter needs to know is that the LETTER CARRIERS are working more OVERTIME then it ever did. The reason is that STUPIDITY RULES THE ROOST, DUE TO THE FACT, THAT THESE BOSSES WANT THEIR BONUSES. Mr. Potter, please be careful as the carrier office managers do not allow the carriers to do their assigned routes that they have served for many years. This is happening in the CENTRAL NEW JERSEY PERFORMANCE CLUSTERS, Vito Cetta, the district manager.
This is true as I work in this area. I know that many carriers left the ODL list because of the forced over-
time. They were refused schedule changes, due to the way the system operates at the present time. Again Mr. Potter, please see that these office managers do their jobs correctly, & learn to leave the carriers do their jobs without trying to make them work longer that they want.

I've been retired since '93, but I keep up with what's happening with the USPS via the internet. Having introduced myself, let me say that Del Polito's 100% on target with his column. Potter has cut deep, even though letter carriers are still screwing the system with their overtime, as has been the case for 50 years. What's also true is 1st Class Mail's decreasing value and volume, and that's an avalanche that won't be stopped anytime soon. I've been doing online banking for 10 years without a hitch, and this is growing by leaps and bounds. I get most bills online, pay them the same way. I haven't received a bank statement via mail in years; it's all online, and I never have a problem.

15 years ago I probably received 3-4 pieces of 1st Class a day; now I don't receive that many in a week, and don't care. What I do get is junk mail that usually goes straight into the trash, and seveal magazines a month. I've been selling many items on eBay, and I usually do a comparison between USPS and UPS - cost and service - when shipping. 75% of the time UPS beats the Postal Service on both counts.

Postal employees, you need to wake up and see the reality of the 21st century; you're burying your head in the sand if you believe some of the silliness that you're posting. .

I must take exception to the words '...letter carriers screwing the system with their overtime'. How is this so where most carriers today are working MANDATORY overtime? Most don't want it, but are forced to do it or otherwise face the consequences of being disciplined if they refuse. If stones are going to be cast, kindly direct them at those truly to blame - management and bean counters from the top on down. After all, THEY are the ones empowered to set (and if they set their minds to it to IMPROVE) policy, NOT the craft employees. If the carriers (and other crafts) are making big paychecks because of OT, it's only right. Believe it or not, the peons have lives too. They should rightfully be rewarded big time for having their lives disrupted. It IS a disruption having to work hours and parts of other routes to which they did not bid on beyond the norm. I would consider working during the dark at 7 PM or later and non-scheduled days to be a MAJOR disruption and something that jeopardizes one's safety and well being. This is something that SPINELESS managers won't acknowledge since they want only the power and glory without the the other stuff that EFFECTIVE managers elsewhere must do in order to remain effective. If the USPS is going the tubes, it's management that's to blame and not the craft employees. Come on management! Be MEN and WOMEN with backbones and admit to your shortcomings. It won't look good on your resumes that you were directly or indirectly responsible for the USPS folding. At best, you'll be lucky if you can get jobs flipping burgers for Mickey D's which managers there do as a major part of their jobs. It'll serve them right!!!!

In our office we have 61 maintenance employees, everyone from custodians to ET's, but yet we have 9 supervisors and one 204B that does all of the route schedules. Maybe Jack Potter should bring his carving knife and do some cut'n.
