Trashing this program means everybody loses

A local Postal Service program that salvaged books, merchandise and CDs from piles of dead mail has been killed by a new manager. The program, created in 1998 by employees at the Tacoma Processing and Distribution Center, generated thousands of dollars in donations to nonprofit agencies and saved thousands of dollars in landfill fees.

All of these items are supposed to go to the Mail Recovery Centers. It's their job to then properly dispose--not a local post office's!

Based on the endorsement placed on the product by the mailer the piece is "disposed of by the USPS" (DMM F010.5.5). Why would the USPS want to become Transcontinental Rubbish haulers, when a local program benefited so many? The last time I checked trucking is expensive. Oh well, they can just expense the costs to the public in the price of postage.

People always complain when you take away something that is free. Those USPS employees need to have other things to do with downtime, or if there is that much downtime, the office needs to downsize or redistribute the employees to busier stations. I agree, raise the postage rates to help pay for all this free stuff. Its all well and good until someone has to pay the bill.

I believe that manager Terri Dickenson showed her STUPIDITY BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT. When a program such
as the one that was done by the workers on downtime should be continued if it is providing a service, then the program should br allowed as it is helping the organization save money, and the donations that are given away, saves this stuff from the junkyard. Then the landfills have room for the regular garbage that the households throw away. The postal service should expand this program to all charities and schools that need funds to stay alive. This is a good way for the postal service to also keep the landfills open for many more years. This program is needed and the service can have the workers who are on light duty do this kind of work, & keep them on the payroll.

But how will this make the USPS any money? This aint a charity organization, and there is other work to do. Them Fat Union and Stupervisor paychecks dont fund themselves. Screw the public.

These items do not go to a Mail Recovery Center, the local CFS disposes of them. This is exactly the kind of no-brain decision making that is driving the USPS down the path of disaster. Instead of helping the local community, this "stupidvisor" just caused the USPS lots of bad publicity.

Who cares what other offices do just do your job and deliver the mail a job which your paid to do, simple as that.

Who is paying for this stuff to get from the Post Office to the landfills ? Is Postal transportation being used thus adding to USPS Expenses ? If the recognized charities, schools etc. are picking up the stuff that should save the USPS the expense of disposing of it. On a nationwide basis, how much per year would the USPS SAVE if it adopted this program at all of its distribution centers ! Another cost cutting, money saving idea crushed by management !
