Unbelievable! The man is eligible to retire, should have been fired years ago and now gets a promotion. PCES on special assignment would have been better. Now the public will find out how incompetent he really is. You know what Letterman says, Will it Float, Will it Float? How Sad for our customers but how good for operations? Hey Mike, you know they hire your type at Walmart to greet people................

What is unbelievable is that you somehow find the gall to denegrate this man. It is obvious from your post that you do not have any sort of college degree, and I am sure you have accomplished a small fraction of what this man has in his career.

You look like a fool throwing spitballs from the cheap seats, but that is the kind of sophomoric behavior we have come to expect from the great unwashed. Stop wasting your time "flaming" you betters, and work on bettering yourself. Until then, you will stay the angry, unhappy, impotent little pissant that your post proves you are.

Gee Mike, I didn't know you read Postalnews.com....

First of all, I am not Mike. Just because I call a cretin a cretin doesn't mean I even know Mike.

Secondly, just push the button once, moron. You are the type of person that forces plastic-bag companies to include the classic "WARNING: DO NOT WEAR OVER YOUR HEAD. DANGER OF ASPHYXIATION."

Now get back to work before you hurt yourself trying to think and type at the same time.

I notice that Spates was involved in "integrating DPS into USPS delivery units." Anyone who has worked with mail knows this doesn't work unless you let the carriers case the DPS. You find mail from every state and Canada in your DPS tray. Canada is not in the US, at least not yet.

Yes I went to college but I have found that college credits are seldom the measure of a man. Lets see, DOIS is a multi million dollar failure, thousands of letter carriers are casing DPS every day across America, there are thousands of supervisor vacancies, there is no decent supervisor training available, overtime is out of control, penalty overtime has become a carrier "right", carriers are leaving late and coming back in late every day and the person responsible for this? One Mr. M Spates.
Yes I can push buttons and evidently I know how to push yours.........

Well, you didn't seem to learn much in college. Where did you attend, the University of Oklahoma? Or worse?

And as far as you "pushing buttons," you really have a high opinion of yourself. Pointing out dogshit really doesn't get my blood pressure up. But good work publishing your moronic defense only once this time.

Now go back to school and learn how to stop throwing stones at people more who are far more successful than you, which includes the greeters at Wal-Mart.

And what is wrong with the University of Oklahoma exactly?

Oops. Sorry, Sooner. I'm just a UT Longhorn still stinging from the football AND basketball losses.

Sorry to paint you with the same brush as the bottom-dweller as I was aiming at. But all the same, hook 'em.

"Just wait 'till next year!" he said, fingers crossed.

From: "the venomous anonymous”
What is wrong with you people? Is there no accountability anymore? If your title reflects your responsibility for a specific function and that function is failing miserably to the point of embarrassment to the rest of the organization, should that earn you a promotion? What happens to good field people that go to HQ? Do you check both your brains and your spine at the door? Walk into some of our delivery units once in a while, and not only the ones within 30 minutes of DC, and just look at the mess you have created! There is a 70% chance that the "person" in charge is untrained, acting, lost and doing the very best they can, no thanks to you. The NALC is having a field day with your "managers" and you are too stupid to see it or you just don't know what to look for which is even worse.

Mike is just a reflection of what has always been wrong with Headquarters Delivery. You have always been reluctant to make a decision or provide direction but quick to look at last week's numbers on overtime and service scores and raise holy hell. The man hated to leave the security of his office and watched over his "children" like they were children, not dedicated men and women. Yes he is a nice guy and yes he wears nice suites. Is that what this company needs? From a man who lives by the motto, “Its better to look good than be good.”

Next time you are glad handing at the PCES meetings drinking the free stuff from the postal tit, eating free steaks, playing with your new free toys of digital cameras, jewelry, boyz toys and waving the big bonus checks, just remember that thousands of dedicated men and women of the postal service are late getting home, missing their kids soccer games and most important, getting more angry by the ticking minute at you. They see you for what you are and what you have become. Too bad the NALC, APWU and the Board of Governors are so blind and stupid to what really goes on at USPS headquarters.

Maybe someone needs to let the American public and congress know what is really going on. While there is still time..............

I've known Mike Spates since about 1981-2, and worked with him over many years. He was always in HQ, and I was in two different Regional offices and two different Divisions over this period of time before I retired. Mike is a great guy, but he is a bureaucrat first and foremost. I don't know that he's ever worked anywhere except USPS HQ, and that's a big shortcoming as far as I'm concerned. I was relocated 4 times by the USPS during my years in management and PCES, but Spates always stayed put in HQ. He does have the knack of getting along and doing what his bosses want, and my guess is that he'll be in this job as an officer for 3 years, get a better "High 3", and bail out with his golden parachute. You can expect him to surface again after a little while working as a consultant in the mailing industry. So it is written; so it will be done.

Well, whatever is right. No field experience and in charge of delivery? That sounds about right. At least Potter once worked for a living....

Anonymous said...

Which is more than we can say for most of the folks who posted here!

Get back to work, and maybe someday you will be as successful as Mike. However, judging by the spelling, punctuation and plain old thought processes displayed here, I thoroughly doubt it.

"judging by the spelling, punctuation and plain old thought processes displayed here" - Your defense of Mr Mike is to worry about my spelling and punctuation? In the topics of recent discussions, I don't see that as being as important as you seem to feel. Incredible abuses of overtime, delayed mail, carriers on the street after 7pm, thousands of acting untrained supervisors and you are concerned about my spelling and punctuation? Ain't that just like a fool, Bubba? Sure I went to kollege for 8 years but I learndt nuting cause I done gone to da U of Oklahoma, evidently.....

Your inability to effectively relate your misgivings, as well as your station in life, is more than enough evidence to prove that you couldn't fill Mike's shoes.

If you believe there are systemic problems within the USPS, and there probably are, you are not doing yourself any good by sitting on the sidelines, throwing cheap shots at people. You are only diminishing your point of view.

And, as always, you are welcome to try your luck with those of us that work in the competitive, for-profit fields. You'll need to adjust your shitty attitude, however.

And also, as far as the many, many abuses of employees that you are claiming: What the hell is your union doing, then? Just like the teacher's unions, I guess, which have done nothing for teachers' pay or for the quality of education in America.

But good luck making fun of people more successful than you are. It will take you far - towards an ulcer.

Fill his shoes? They are already filled with a poor excuse for a leader. My success in life has not been measured by a comparison with Mr. Spates. My success is measured by the love of my family, the respect of my many friends and the success obtained in the private sector. Having said that, you miss the point of the observation. He was recognized by many in the field for what he was in Delivery, THE PROBLEM and not the solution. I also worked in HQ and the field and saw first hand how this wonderful human being impacted the core business of one of the largest companies in the world. The price of stamps is higher than they COULD be because of him and directly to him.
Your defense of this warm and loving person must reflect something beyond friendship. I always wondered why his shoes were always shined....

This will end my endless responses to your endless responses. You love him, I don't. I bet you are still crying since Kerry lost.

Your post makes about as much sense as the original attack on this man does. But it does have a lot of words; good job being verbose if nothing else.

And soon you'll be crying because you voted for Bush, another knuckle-dragging, slack-jawed moron. He doesn't represent you; he lied and played on your myriad fears to get your vote, and you are continuing to willingly bend over.

And here I always thought Mr. Spates was pretty well versed in Operations and Delivery -- just challenged when it comes to people skills. So, of course, he's named our customers' chief champion. Go figure. I understand a number of folks who worked for him have filed complaints over the years, always swept away and previously attributed to the intervention of his buddy, Mr. Coughlin (no longer an option). This isn't the first time I've heard someone suggest he should have been fired on many occasions. But he's good at sucking up to his superiors, just as he insists his subordinates do the same to him. But we'll see; I suspect the prediction of 3 years to get a new high three is pretty much right. I hope our customers last that long.

To the poster At 8:04 AM, from your comments at this time, and earlier, I have a feeling that we've worked together or at least been associated with each other over the years before I retired (end of 1992). Perhaps a posting with your initials or something to let me know if my hunch is correct. My initials are AD. . . . .

To 1:54 pm - I have read all of the comments with great interest. It was fun to see the banter back and forth and while I don't know this guy Spates, it has become obvious that your side of the story is from a democratic slant. And like most democrats, your response doesn't address the facts but only the emotions. The initial charge was that Spates was responsible for the failure of his duties and instead of addressing that charge you defended him because of his personality and his education. As a good democrat, you can't handle the truth. As for our President, well let’s just say he won the election and Kerry didn’t. Why do you think that is? Now you know what most of the country went through when Clinton was in the Oval office, the pain, the hurt, the fear and the loathing. Put your hopes on Hillary. After all, he climbed Mt. Everest. My initials are USA and I live in America and I hope I never worked with you.

Anonymous said...

To 3:11 PM, no, I doubt we ever worked together. My knowledge of this stuff post-dates your retirement. And besides, my 8:04 AM posting was my only previous contribution to this conversation.
But it's interesting that my political leanings are the polar opposite of the discussions. Meaning that opinion in this matter is just that, an opinion, and has nothing to do with political tendencies. I think that's a smokescreen, and I prefer to focus on competency and value to USPS. That's where I and Mr. Spates parted company.

Anonymous said...

Any pain and fear and loathing you felt during the boom Clinton years was entirely self-inflicted. And Clinton won both elections with a far bigger margin the W, so stop claiming "most," and stick to those facts that you claim to represent, Bush's butt boy.

Anonymous said...

And anyway, the original post was far from fact-filled, and I still say the poster is far more likely to wind up at Wal-Mart fetching carts, just based on their hateful little post. And your buddy Bush is all about the Wal-Martization of the USA, and the death of the middle class. You let the emotions of fear and hatred dictate your vote for W, so don't go pointing your finger at anyone. It just serves to make you look that much more foolish.
